Character Education

The first program of its kind in the nation, this series of courses from the University of San Diego’s Division of Continuing Education leads to a ‘Certificate in Character Education.’ The program is designed to integrate practical knowledge and current research about moral development, conflict resolution, ethics, values and citizenship for P-12 educators interested in character education.

Educators trained in character education are best equipped to affect change in the school climate and culture and help their students develop positive values while learning subject area concepts and skills.

General Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the Character Education courses and special projects, the participants will know:

• How students develop good character
• How character education can reduce violence, increase students' peaceful resolution of conflict, and increase student achievement
• How to apply the best advice of the experts in the field
• How to apply a comprehensive framework to a character education program
• How to involve parents and the community, form partnerships, and join networks
• How to design, implement, and assess character education programs, lessons, and school-wide activities
• How to design an action plan that introduces, reinforces, and creates opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learned about values and ethics
