| California has an ever-growing population of students whose second language is English, creating a unique set of challenges to teachers of all grade levels and content areas. The California Department of Education has addressed this issue by requiring all teachers to demonstrate knowledge of current, cross-cultural language and academic development theories and methods through course work or by examination. This class is a survey course of all the various theories and methodologies relating to these topics and is the first in a series of four courses that meet the coursework requirement for the CLAD certificate. As a CLAD (Cross Cultural, Language and Academic Development) course, it prepares teachers to effectively teach students whose primary language is other than English. The course will provide a general knowledge of the CLAD theory, methodology, and culture. |
