Codecademy is a free, interactive online platform for learning Python, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, Java, jQuery, HTML and CSS and more. Training is available for beginners who know nothing about programming. Languages are English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
All tutorials at Codeacademy are gathered into step-by-step tutorials. The site interface has been translated into Russian; however, the courses themselves are not translated yet. Text explanations, however, are quite detailed and understandable.
The user also has access to the guide to the subject of the course and a section with a forum. For some courses there are “sandboxes” in which users can test their programming codes. In the user’s personal account, you can track course progress and admire awards for completing lessons.

Udemy’s goal is to become an online learning platform where you can learn almost anything.

There are more than 100,000 courses. Some teach professional skills, while others are about different hobbies (like learning to play video games).

Employers can access Udemy’s most popular courses to motivate their employees to learn.

It turns out that even giant companies like Adidas, Pinterest and Eventbrite have taken advantage of the platform’s offerings.

To cover such a huge number of topics, on the platform Udemy gives any user the opportunity to publish their course. That’s why there are courses here on topics like “plant care” that you won’t find on other platforms.

The fact that anyone can try their hand as a teacher is both a good idea and a bad idea. The idea is good in that it gives people a chance to share their expertise, even if they don’t have a credential. A lot of course authors on Udemy are graduate students at universities or just professionals.

What’s wrong with that idea? Because Udemy is an open platform, there are no big name professors or university professors here. They prefer to teach on more prestigious platforms like Coursera.

In addition, the quality of some courses leaves a lot to be desired. So if tomorrow I want to publish a course which I made on my knees in a couple of hours, no one will bother me.

Of course there is a high probability that this course will get bad ratings from all those who take it, so you should choose courses with high ratings so that you do not lose your money and time. But even the grading system on the Udemy platform is far from perfect, to say the least, and I’ll talk about that later too.

Skills IQ

Skills IQ is a pretty cool thing that allows you to roughly estimate your level of knowledge on a topic. This is just a test with answer choices that adjusts for you as you go. That is, if you do not answer a difficult question, the difficulty is automatically reduced. Such tests are especially useful for team leaders, who can ask their colleagues to test certain skills they need in their work and figure out who needs to tighten up, and who better to get what work tasks done.

For example, I took the tests in the disciplines I use in my work: graphic design, CSS, HTML, JavaScript. Got some pretty interesting results, some of them even surprised me. For example, I scored surprisingly high in CSS and at the same time found out that I needed to improve my HTML skills.

And shortly after that, I was supposed to be interviewed for a promotion at my office. When our most important boss, who has never worked with me directly and doesn’t know what I can and can’t do, asked me about my proficiency in specific skills, I directly quoted the test results, it was very convenient and revealing. By the way, I got the promotion 😉

Notes

It would seem to be nothing, but their notes are organized as hell. As you go through the course and watch the videos, it’s very convenient to make quick notes that are tied to timecodes, or with tags; it’s very easy to navigate and repeat what you’ve learned.

Paths

Conveniently made the so-called learning paths, when a number of different courses are selected for a particular interesting topic, you can not choose a course from a particular author, and the path, and follow it, completing the courses selected curators.
